Several years ago, I ripped a short story from an audiobook CD (Stephen King’s Everything’s Eventual) and stored it on my Mac. I came across the book last week at the local library, and decided to listen to the tale again.

But when I found the folder that contained the audio, I discovered that I hadn’t used iTunes’ built-in joining feature at the time I ripped the CD; there were several .MP3 audio files, one for each track of the disc. This is not the ideal way to listen to an audiobook on an iPhone or any other device.

So, I decided to re-rip the original disc, but it was missing from the case. Typical. I was stuck with those 25 or so files, but still wanted a single Audiobook file for the story. So the search began.

Turns out there are several tools for joining MP3 files on a Mac, but most are paid applications and I didn’t want to shell out $20 just to join a few tracks. But I found a free solution that worked quite well, and offered a lot of other useful features as well.

The application is called MP3 Trimmer from a developer called deepNiner. The app’s primary purpose – no surprise given the title – is to trim .MP3 audio files. But, tucked inside this software is a handy tool that also allows you to join different tracks together into a single .MP3 file.

Here’s how to use MP3 Trimmer to join .MP3 audio files together:

First, install the application on your Mac. Once you do, you’ll see the application window used to trim excess audio from MP3s. Ignore this and go to the toolbar and select Tools > MP3 Joiner:

Next, drag-and-drop the audio files you wish to join into the Join MP3 Files window:

If you need to re-order the files, you can do so by dragging-and-dropping them into the desired order. Most files – if the filenames are sequential – should auto arrange.

Click Select Target Folder, give the new joined file a name and click Save. MP3 Trimmer will begin joining the files together into a new, unified file. This may take a while depending on the speed of your computer and the size and number of files to be joined:

When complete, you’ll have a new, single .MP3 file that you can put into iTunes or other audio application, transcode into another audio format, and use as you wish.

I tested MP3 trimmer’s file joining function with several sets of .MP3 files. All but once the process completed without a hitch.

In that one instance, the resulting file should have been a hour long, but was only 4 minutes; I wasn’t able to nail-down the problem, so check your resulting joined file before you delete the original files used to created it.

Also, while MP3 Trimmer is free to download and use, if you find it worthwhile and are going to use it on an ongoing basis, consider registering; it costs $11 and gets rid of some waiting dialog screens found on the unregistered version. You can register within the app or here.
